Son Heung-min is the worst of Tottenham’s attacking options

“Not a good day…we conceded after a turnover”

Son Heung-min has come in for some harsh criticism.

Tottenham Hotspur fell 0-4 to Newcastle United in the 33rd round of the 2023-24 Premier League (PL) season at St. James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET. Tottenham (60 points, 65 goals, 49 points, +16 goal difference) drops to fifth place, behind Aston Villa (60 points, 66 goals, 49 points, +17), while Newcastle (50 points) is sixth.

The battle for the top four is really tight. Enze Postecoglou’s Tottenham and Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are tied on points.

In many ways, Tottenham had the advantage. Villa have to juggle the UEFA Europa Conference (UECL), while Spurs can focus solely on the league. Spurs have also played one game less than Villa, so the gap could be widened by the results of this round. Spurs arrive at St. James’ Park with extra motivation.

Postecoglou opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation. Heung-Min Son was the leading striker. In the second line, Timo Werner, James Maddison, and Brennan Johnson provided support. Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma were in charge of the midfield. The defense was led by Destiny Udoji, Mickey van der Penn, Christian Romero, and Pedro Foro. Guglielmo Vicario was in goal.

But the result was shocking. Newcastle took the lead in the first half through an Alexander Isaac goal in the 30th minute 토토사이트 and an Anthony Gordon goal in the 32nd minute. Isaac doubled the lead six minutes into the second half.

With the deficit deepening, Tottenham threw in the towel 12 minutes into the second half, withdrawing Bissouma, Bentancur and Son Heung-min for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Pape Sarr and Dejan Kulusebski.

It didn’t pay off in the end. Giovani Lo Celso came on for Maddison in the 36th minute, but it was to no avail. In fact, they conceded another goal to Fabian Scherer in stoppage time from a corner. In the end, Spurs suffered a shocking 0-4 defeat.

Football London gave Werner, Maddison, and Johnson a four-star rating and Son a three-star rating. The publication said: “It was a bad day for the captain. He struggled in the center and conceded twice after turnovers. He was eventually substituted off in the 58th minute.”

Next up, Spurs will look to get back to winning ways in the North London derby against Arsenal.
